Taking care of your jewelry

An explanation about how to maintain and store your valuable jewelry to ensure that it can continue to be worn for years to come.

Taking care of and storing red coral.

As red coral is a delicate gemstone, it should always be gently wiped clean of perspiration or dirt with a soft cloth or chamois leather after it has been worn.
If it comes into contact with, for example, highly acidic fruit juice, wipe clean as soon as possible. If the substance can’t be completely removed, the coral can be lightly washed in water, after which any moisture should be completely wiped off and the item allowed to dry naturally.
The coral should be stored away from direct sunlight, in a jewelry box or similar location. We recommend that the item be stored in a jewelry box with divisions so that it isn’t damaged through contact with other jewelry.
As red coral requires humidity, do not use any desiccants as this may cause damage.

Precautions when handling coral

As red coral is sensitive to acid and heat, over time perspiration and makeup can cause a whitening of the surface or a loss in luster, while high temperatures may cause cracks in the coral.

Please be aware of perspiration and acidic substances.
Ideally, coral should not be worn during seasons when there is a tendency for increased perspiration. Also make sure acidic substances such as fruit juice and makeup don’t come into contact with your coral.
Remove the jewelry before bathing, particularly if the water is very hot.
Hot spring and bath salts may contain sulfur and acids which are corrosive and may cause discoloration of the coral.
Your jewelry should also be removed when cooking or playing sports.
When temperatures can rise, and ensure that your jewelry doesn’t come into contact with heating appliances.

*Re-polishing will restore your jewelry if the coral becomes discolored or loses its sheen. Glous carries out free re-polishing within 12 months of purchase.

Taking care of and storing pearls

Use a soft cloth to gently remove perspiration or dirt from your pearls, which should then be stored in a jewelry box. As pearls are sensitive to friction, we recommend that the item be stored in a jewelry box with divisions.
Do not use desiccants inside your jewelry box, as extremely dry conditions will cause pearls to deteriorate. If your pearl jewelry comes into contact with, for example, highly acidic fruit juice, wipe clean as soon as possible. If any substance can’t be wiped away completely, then the coral can be lightly washed in water, after which any moisture should be completely wiped off and the item allowed to dry naturally.

Precautions when handling pearls

Pearls are gemstones, the surface of which can become easily damaged with fine scratches. Pearls are also sensitive to acid and heat which can cause discoloration and a powdery appearance.

Avoid friction between your pearl jewelry and hard substances or objects.
An increase in scratches on the surface of the pearl will negatively affect its appearance. Avoid friction resulting from your pearl jewelry coming into contact with any hard substances or objects.
Wear your pearls after completing your makeup.
Putting on your pearls in an acidic environment caused by perspiration or makeup may cause discoloration or a powdery appearance of the pearl/s. We recommend that your pearls be worn after perfume and hairspray has been applied. Also ensure that your pearls don’t come into contact with fruit juice.
Do not leave your pearls sitting in direct sunlight.
As heat and ultraviolet rays can cause discoloration, do not put your pearls in a high temperature environment, such as in contact with direct sunlight or near heating appliances.
*In the event of discoloration or a powdery appearance, the pearl’s original sheen can be restored by re-polishing. At Glous, re-polishing will be carried out for free within the first 12 months of purchase.
